Steak Knives -- Which set to choose?
The need for a good set of steak knives if often overlooked. If you're looking to cut into a thick, juicy steak, most of the time your normal cutlery just won't...well..cut it. I'm sure that you've all experienced the frustration of trying to cut a thick steak with a blunt knife, or even worse, the dangerous work of cutting one with a knife that flexes and bends as you slice. Personally, I'd rather cut chunks of tender steak than chunks of my tender fingers.
Just like any other type of knife, the quality and price of steak knives varies greatly. The higher-end knives come with their own knife block, or wooden case, while mid-price range knives are generally stored in a cutlery draw (just watch those fingers when you go hunting for them). However much you're willing to spend, there's a set of steak knives out there that will suit your purpose.
It's important to choose knives with a full tang (for strength and durability) as well as a solid handle, so that you can keep them in good condition for a long time. Here are a few of my picks:
If you're looking for the absolute highest quality, the Wusthoff culinar series will deliver. The Wusthoff Culinar series is considered by many to be the most comfortable, durable, and best performing steak knife on the market. The culinar series has a full tang blade, and a beautiful brushed steel finish to the handles. They come with their own padded case for maximum protection, and are literally razor sharp.

A more traditional, and equally beautiful option is the series of steak knives made by Forschner, aka Victorinox, the folks who make swiss army knives. Forschner knives are quickly becoming some of the most popular cooking knives in the world, and their steak knives live up to this reputation. I particularly like the rosewood handle, and they perform incredibly well.

For a set of steak knives at a lower price point, my pick is the Calphalon traditional series. They too feature a full tang, and a solid riveted handle. They also feature an innovative semi-serrated blade; the front half of the blade is serrated, while the lower half is not. This allows for both the effective cutting action of a serrated blade, and the smooth-slicing action of a traditional one. They also come in an attractive wooden case, which makes them perfect as a gift.

As I encounter different steak knives, I'll do my best to review them and keep you updated.
Enjoy!
